Día de los Muertos: San Andres Mixquic is an informative and entertaining documentary special exploring the Mexican tradition of honoring the dead and celebrating the continuity of life on All Souls Day (Día de los Muertos/Day of the Dead), as it is observed in Mixquic, Mexico, where approximately 1 million people make an annual pilgrimage to celebrate the Day of the Dead. The documentary special includes music, on-location interviews and recordings of the sounds of the festivities with narration by accomplished actress Ivonne Coll.
Five years ago, Family Theater Productions’ Radio Department staff began covering and audio recording Día de los Muertos celebrations in the United States, Ireland and Mexico to produce a program comparing the Halloween/Day of the Dead holidays in those three countries. That one-hour special is currently in post-production. Because of the richness of the celebration and the recordings in Mixquic, Mexico, Family Theater Productions decided to produce and release first a one-hour program based on the Día de los Muertos observance in that Mexican town, famous for its Day of the Dead celebration.
The production crews traveled to Mixquic as well as to Dublin, Ireland, and to Attymass and other small towns in County Mayo, Ireland and to Los Angeles and Pasadena in the U.S. for on-site production during the last five years.
